Across Corteva we are fortunate to have interns like Lochie Fulton, providing a fresh perspective and learning what #LifeAtCorteva is like, working to support farmers and enrich lives.
Lochie joined Corteva in April 2024 on a 6-month internship. Let’s hear a bit more about Lochie’s experience working as a Forage Intern for Corteva Agriscience UK and Ireland.
Tell us a little about yourself?
I graduated from Exeter University with a degree in Biological Sciences and specialised in microbiology and infectious disease. This degree was predominantly based on medical and human biology with little application to agriculture and/or the industry. Having previously worked on a cattle station in NSW, Australia, I saw that this internship provided an opportunity to combine the two experiences. Having always lived on the Devon/Cornwall border and attending University in Exeter, I wanted to move to Cambridge and to pursue an internship as promising as this one and it certainly delivered!
What inspired you to apply for the internship role at Corteva?
I wanted to combine all my past experiences in a role that maintained a scientific application but also develop my skills within an industry advancing firm. Corteva piqued my interest as it had both R&D excellence and commercial quality and I wanted to immerse myself in it all. For such a large firm, the culture and the team ethos has been brilliant and nurturing. All members are willing to support your development as an intern and are inspirational to work with. On top of this, the prioritisation of the farming community encourages you as an employee that the focus is right where it needs to be.
What has a typical day at Corteva been like for you?
The forage intern role is somewhat varied, and you are involved in a range of events and projects. It is possible that you will be attending grassland trials in Dumfries on Tuesday and walking a maize crop in Somerset on Wednesday. You are constantly engaging with customers and end-users of the forage portfolio and will be immersed from day one. Once off the fields and in the office, duties would range from carrying out market intelligence projects to preparing logistics for the full summer of grassland events.
What have been your highlights of this role?
The ability to immerse yourself in as many sectors of the business providing you show interest. Teams across the categories are encouraging and enthusiastic to support you where they can. I have enjoyed this inclusive experience as it allows you to further your technical understanding of the products on the R&D side, while communication at networking events helps you identify what is needed for the future and the end-user. The opportunity for self-development is second-to-none at Corteva and I am grateful to have been positioned within a driven and inquisitive forage team.
Do you have any advice for people wanting to enter the agricultural sector?
To not be discouraged if you have no agricultural background or experience. You don’t have to have taken specific paths to work in the agricultural industry, simply be curious and hard-working. The agricultural industry is at the center of the UK and global economies and its importance continues to grow. The future of the agricultural sector is fascinating, there is an application in agriculture for everyone and I would encourage anyone to test the waters with this internship. Corteva is an innovative and complete firm, the UK and Ireland team provides a supportive environment for anyone with enthusiasm to establish themselves and excel in.
