Tell us a little bit about the part of the country where you work?
I work in the South West, based in Mid Devon and cover from Bristol across to Sussex and down to Cornwall.
Do you have a connection to agriculture outside of Corteva?
Yes, my stepdad farms in West Cornwall where I grew up, he grows brassica veg and potatoes. I also farm myself, now in Devon and have a total of around 200 breeding ewes, comprising approximately 150 commercial ewes and 50 pedigree blue texels which I enjoy showing at many county shows.
Can you describe your journey to becoming an Area Manager at Corteva?
I left university having got a degree in bioveterinary science and was fortunate enough to receive an offer for a job as a trainee agronomist. I worked towards and achieved my BASIS Diploma and spent 10 years working as an agronomist in Cornwall and Devon before joining Corteva.
What has been the most interesting project you’ve worked on at Corteva?
I think the Biological portfolio is really interesting, and I placed several biological trials last year shortly after joining the business. It was great to get some first-hand experience and deeper knowledge of the products through my own trials on farm, as well as getting the positive feedback from growers and agronomists.
How do you keep up to date with the latest advancements and trends in agriculture?
I read the farming press as well as use social media. A lot of my friends are also in agriculture in one way or another.
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to become an Area Manager in the agricultural industry?
Gain as much experience as possible in varied roles, especially in the field, and develop an understanding of the challenges agronomists face daily, so that you can support them well in your role as an area manager.
Why would you recommend Corteva as a great place to work?
Corteva values its people and has a real ‘family’ feel to its workforce. We are a team and that’s really important. You can be your authentic self at Corteva, and inclusivity and equality are hugely important to the business. Corteva also recognises the values of work/life balance which is important for me having livestock to look after outside of work hours.
