Tell us a little bit about your role at Corteva?
I am a Field Scientist at Corteva, serving as the Principal Biologist for cereal, oilseed rape, and sugar beet herbicides in the UK. Recently, I’ve also taken on responsibility as the Principal Biologist for discovery-stage herbicides. My role involves collaborating with colleagues across the UK and Europe, as well as coordinating with external contractors, to deliver our herbicide field trial programme. This includes designing protocols, visiting trial sites, analysing, and presenting data, and preparing dossiers for submissions.
Can you describe your journey to becoming a Field Scientist at Corteva?
I have a degree in crop science and a PhD in field margin ecology. I previously worked in weed research and joined Dow AgroSciences (now Corteva Agriscience) in 2014 as a technical services specialist, continuing in this role at Corteva. More recently, I have moved into the research and development side of the business as a field scientist.
Do you have a connection to agriculture outside of Corteva?
Yes, I grew up on a family farm in South Wales. I still take a “holiday” each spring to go and help out with lambing.
What has been the most innovative project you’ve worked on at Corteva?
I have been a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) ambassador representing Corteva for several years, and enjoy passing on knowledge of agriculture, food and farming to the younger generation.
How do you keep up to date with the latest advancements and trends in agriculture?
I am BASIS qualified and attend CPD training events to keep my knowledge current. I also read farming press, scientific articles, and online materials.
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to become a Field Scientist in the agricultural industry?
It’s a great job for anyone with a background in biology, who enjoys a mixture of time in the field and data analysis / reporting.
