What is annual meadow grass?
Common and persistent, annual meadow grass is highly adaptable, thriving in fertile soils and prevalent in traditional rotations. The grass weed is also encouraged where min till establishment is favoured.
How can I identify annual meadow grass?
Annual meadow grass plants are small and tufted, and between 3-30 cm tall. Leaves are pale green, leaf tips are curved, and the undersides of leaves are ridged. Flower heads spread and branch and appear triangular.

Some plants overwinter and therefore both emerging and flowering plants can be found next to each other. Annual meadow grass mainly reproduces via seed, but it also has a long lateral root and can regenerate from broken root fragments.
Why is annual meadow grass a problem?
Although it is a small plant, annual meadow grass can grow in large numbers in a field. These plants then compete with the crop for nutrients and water. Annual meadow grass can delay ripening because it increases the moisture content of the straw and interferes with harvest.
